JM & SM Zagami Builders
John Zagami has been working as a builder in East Gippsland for around 28 years and has been hosting GGT/AV apprentices for most of that time.
Many of our host employers are small business owners like John, who rely on us to provide flexible apprenticeship solutions for their business. John is currently providing work for 2 of our carpentry apprentices, and has contributed over the years to the success of many more young, local people.

Becoming a Host Employer
Employment options

It is also a great way to prepare for the future, by training up the next generation of employees for your business. Best of all, you will be passing on your skills and experience to people who are enthusiastic to learn.
How to start
You might like to start by contacting our Australian Apprenticeships Centre to discuss the kind of apprentice you need for your business. Our friendly AAC staff can advise you about everything involved in employing or hiring an apprentice.
If you already know about apprenticeships, you will know that you have a number of employment options:
Group Training - A group training organisation like GGT/AV can hire an apprentice to you business for the whole period of their apprenticeship, or for a short term work placements, depending on your needs. We handle all the paperwork and red tape for you, and have apprentices already recruited and ready to go.
For more information on this option click here
Direct employment - You can also choose to recruit and employ your own apprentice, or you might have someone in mind already that you want to employ. Our AAC staff can help you to sign up your own apprentice. Depending upon your circumstances government incentives may be avaliable to employers.

What is a ‘host employer’?
If you accept an apprentice through a Group Training organisation, you will become a ‘host employer'. This is different to being the direct employer of an apprentice. In effect, GGT/AV hires an apprentice to your business (and you “host” them) for a short or long term work placement. We remain the employer at all times, and look after their apprentices pay, superannuation, workcover and tax.
As a host employer, you pay a simple hourly rate, for the actual hours that the apprentice works for you. You don't get charged for days that the apprentice is absent from work (for example, trade school, annual or sick leave.)
Host employers have the assurance of knowing that the apprentices supplied to their business have been carefully selected by GGT/AV. They will already have received some trade training, a full OH&S induction and understand the expectations that will be placed on them in the workplace.
We can usually set you up with an apprentice immediately, as we employ over 1200 apprentices at any time. The apprentice arrives on the first day with all of their basic training completed, with a full tool kit and their own safety gear and protective clothing. A GGT/AV field officer will help to select the right apprentice for your business and will provide regular, monthly follow up visits and support. If you are having any issues with the apprentice, the field officer can help to resolve them, or to find you another apprentice.
Hiring a GGT/AV apprentice is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to get an apprentice working for your business.
Who can become a host employer?
To become a host you need to have both :
- Relevant work to offer an apprentice in their chosen trade; and
- Qualified staff who can supervise the apprentice in the workplace.
Would you like to find out more?
Our field staff are happy to visit you at your workplace to explain what is involved, at no cost and with no obligation. We understand that not everyone will be ready to commit to taking on an apprentice immediately.
