Gippsland Group Training

Latrobe City

Latrobe City has a long association with Gippsland Group Training Ltd, dating back to the company’s beginnings in the eighties.

Over that time, Latrobe City has offered continuous support for our organisation, both through the hosting of business trainees and as a valued Member Organisation.

Cr. Darrell White is a long serving member of our Board of Directors, and brings to GGT/AV's governance a great deal of experience and understanding of the region's needs.

Australian Apprenticeships -What is AAC

What are 'Australian Apprenticeships'?

'Australian Apprenticeships' include both apprenticeships and traineeships and are a form of nationally recognised qualification that is available in most industries and professions. They are delivered under the 'Australian Apprenticeships' (previously called 'New Apprenticeships') scheme by the Department of Education, Science and Training, in partnership with the state government Office of Training and Tertiary Education (OTTE).

Every Australian Apprenticeship requires three parties :

    An apprentice, who is seeking training and experience;
    An employer, who can offer work and relevant, on-the-job training;
    A Registered Training Organisation (or RTO) that delivers structured or off-the-job trade training.

These parties sign a Training Contract which commences the apprenticeship and is lodged with the State Government. The signing and preparation of the Training Contract must be done by an authorised Australian Apprenticeships Centre.

The Australian Fair Pay Commission determines the rate of pay and employment conditions for Australian Apprentices in different industries, which are generally set lower than that of a qualified person. Employers generally receive financial incentives for employing apprentices.

Australian Apprenticeships have a set duration, which can in some situations be varied. Upon successful completion of their on-the-job and structured training, the Australian apprentice receives a nationally recognised qualification.

Australian Apprenticeships Centres

Australian Apprenticeships Centres (AAC) are contracted to the Australian Government and provide a free advice and information service to the general public through a network of providers like Apprenticeships Victoria.

Every GGT/AV office functions as an Australian Apprenticeship Centre. Our friendly and professional staff can provide you with advice over the phone, or by email, and our field officers are also very happy to visit your workplace to answer your questions about apprenticeships and traineeships.

You can contact an AAC at any time for advice on :

    How to sign up an apprentice;
    How to locate an apprentice for your business;
    How to find a Registered Training Organisation to train your staff;
    Your rights and responsibilities as an employer or apprentice;
    Financial incentives for employing apprentices.

ALL OF THESE SERVICES are provided FREE of charge to employers and apprentices.

There are many hundreds of Australian apprenticeships available today, in more than twenty different industry groups. AAC staff are trained and qualified to provide you with advice on every one of them.

There are several Australian Apprenticeships Centres in both Gippsland and Melbourne, and consumers have a choice about which one to use (all AACs are subsidised by the government to provide free services to the public). Only GGT/AV have been actively employing apprentices ourselves for 25 years, and have 10 years’ experience providing AAC services to employers.
